our Vision Trip to South Africa
Hey from Chris, Kara, and Mason,
We’re packing our bags for Cape Town, South Africa. We’ll be there for about 2 weeks, spending time with Media Village and Beautiful Gate ministries. One serves Africa through media production and training, the other serves the area of Cape Town through community health and a clinic for children with HIV.
Our hope is that we find a place for long term service with these two ministries. For years we have looked for a place where our different gifts can fit in Africa. We’ve traveled in Mozambique, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, yet haven’t found a place where we both felt called to serve.
About 6 months ago, we met Graham Vermooter, CEO of Media Village. A fantastic man who has been building with his wife, Diane, a top notch video production and training ministry in Cape Town over the last 15 years. They have been the media training arm for YWAM and they train YWAM students from all over Africa and Asia in video, radio, and writing communication. They also produce documentaries, promotional, and editorial pieces for many non-profits throughout the world. Some of their work has included a documentary on the successful reduction of HIV in Uganda, anti-sex slavery materials, and a yearly documentary of the worldwide prayer day movement. You can explore more about what they do in the South Africa section of Teamwynn.com.
As I connected with Graham and told him about my and Kara’s passion to serve in Africa, we discovered an obvious connection between what I’ve been doing in media production and what they do out of Cape Town, but in addition he is close friends with another couple who started an HIV childrens clinic and hospice in Cape Town about the same time that Diane and he started Media Village. Kara has been involved many times over the years with rural clinics in Rwanda and Mozambique, and has had a passions to serve marginalized groups like this. Beautiful Gate started as an HIV children’s clinic in the Crossroads section of Cape Town and has expanded its impact to include rescue services for orphans, community health education, and advocacy. We realized everything Kara has learned working in the Emergency Room at Denver Health could be a great fit for what they are doing. You can learn more about Beautiful Gate from the South Africa section of Teamwynn.com.
We would love prayers for this adventure. We’re visiting to see if the relationship between us and these ministries could be a long term one. It’s a big thing to move a family around the world and integrate into another culture, and we want to make sure these relationships and ministries fit us and much as we fit them.
Please, pray for the travels. (26 hours on a plane with a 14 month old, energetic boy is no joke.), but pray even more for God’s guidance.
To say we are excited about the possibilities is an understatement. We’ve been dreaming, hoping and seeking for a place to serve in Africa since around 2002. This could be the culmination of long search, and the beginning of a journey we feel God made us to have.
